Steve DeVore’s path to NuArtis Wildlife was shaped by a fascination with nature and a lifelong study of art, literature and history. Time in forests and mountains, close observation of wildlife, and an interest in how great artists interpreted nature gradually brought wilderness and imagination, tradition and technology together. NuArtis Wildlife grew from that convergence—work created to capture the presence, character and enduring spirit of the wild.

Steve DeVore’s path to NuArtis Wildlife was shaped by a fascination with the natural world and an extensive study of art, literature and history that gradually led to a new way of creating—and seeing the wild.

Long before NuArtis, the wild had already become part of Steve’s life. As a boy, he trekked the Sierra Nevada with his father, fishing remote mountain streams for trout. During college summers, he worked as a forest firefighter, surrounded by vast forests, rugged mountains, and the elemental power of the wilderness. Years later, while producing a first-edition collection of Jack London’s The Call of the Wild, Steven immersed himself in the Alaskan wilderness and undertook an extensive study of wolves—their behavior, intelligence, social structure, and
remarkable instinct for survival Yhat experience led to the opportunity to adopt and raise two wolf pups, an Arctic wolf and a timber wolf, which he cared for through maturity before placing them in a wolf preserve where they could live and roam freely. Across a lifetime, fascination with the natural world deepened into an enduring respect for the beauty, intelligence, resilience, and untamed spirit of wild things.

Steve’s creative life developed through an unusually broad study of human achievement. His work in art, literature and history led to the creation of The World’s 100 Greatest Books and The World’s 100 Greatest People collections, later marketed by Encyclopaedia Britannica.
The latter explored the lives, ideas and work of many of history’s great artists—deepening his understanding of how composition, light, color and visual storytelling can shape what we feel.

Steve studied the principles that give enduring works of art their power—composition, heroic scale, chiaroscuro, directional light, color relationships and atmosphere—and made them the foundation of the NuArtis visual-development process, providing a disciplined artistic framework for working with contemporary tools.
